Stiff Paint

STIFFENING PAINT
For the "dry brush" method to work in oils, the paint must be much stiffer than it comes out of commercially prepared tubes. I squeeze out the paint onto cardboard or blotter paper, which absorbs the excess oil in about 15 to 30 minutes. (Notice the staining around the edges of the paint.)

The resulting paint is a stiff, almost sculptural pigment that has what I call "textural memory."
