Underpainting

UNDERPAINTING
Now the actual painting begins. I always start with an underpainting — a thin, monochromatic version of the composition that maps the overall value structure and color harmony.

Because of my preliminary studies, my underpainting is able to clearly establish the composition and even some of the atmospheric quality. The underpainting color — in this case, yellow ochre — was chosen because it would serve as a warm backdrop to the colors or "layers of light" that will be applied over it.

Note the very thin suggestion of a radio antennae on the right ... I would eventually choose to remove this accent.
