THE REFERENCE FOR THIS pastoral scene was a picture postcard. In several areas — in the foreground snow and in the boughs of the trees — there is clear texture applied to the brushwork. Intuitively, the artist recognized what is called “tactile perspective.” By giving greater texture to forms that are closer, and less texture to forms that are distant, the flat surface of the painting can begin to imply space. Color-wise, the effect of the yellow-orange sunset is heightened by the use of compementary colors. Yellow-orange is chromatically opposite to blue-violet making the yellow color seem that much more intense.
