LARGE WORKS and Studio Painting

WHILE ALL LANDSCAPE PAINTERS take their inspiration from nature, most develop larger paintings inside the studio. Outdoor sketches are an ideal way to capture color and a momentary impression, but weather conditions and fleeting light make them impractical for larger works that take longer to execute.

The studio painting is the artist's most full-bodied expression. Here the artist works out visual problems, exploring options in color and composition, or even reworking the painting several times.
In my own work, the slow, studied approach of the studio painting affords me the time needed to experiment with composition. Also, complex brushwork needing several days of drying in between sessions, would simply be impossible in a quick study.
